The Best Dark Fantasy Books

Dark fantasy covers a lot of ground. On one end there's a creepy forest that eats people and a girl who won't stop feeding the house spirits. On the other, a fourteen-year-old warlord narrating his own atrocities. Both belong here, but you probably don't want to pick one up expecting the other.

That's what the darkness rating is for. Anything 4 or 5 deserves a look at the content warnings first. Most of these are light on spice. The ones that aren't are marked, and if dark fantasy romance is what you're after, the romantasy list has the books where the love story leads.

Questions people ask

What counts as dark fantasy?

Fantasy where the world is hostile and the cost is real. Characters die and stay dead, magic has a price, and the heroes are not always heroes. It runs from gothic fairy tales like Uprooted all the way to grimdark like Prince of Thorns.

What's the difference between dark fantasy and grimdark?

Grimdark is the bleakest end of dark fantasy. In dark fantasy hope usually survives somewhere. In grimdark, like The Blade Itself or Prince of Thorns, the point is that it mostly doesn't.

What is the darkest fantasy book?

Of the books we rate, The Poppy War and Prince of Thorns both get a 5 out of 5 for darkness. The Poppy War depicts genocide and is based on real wartime atrocities, so read the warnings first.

Is there dark fantasy with romance?

Plenty. The Serpent and the Wings of Night, One Dark Window, The Book of Azrael and Kushiel's Dart all sit between dark fantasy and romantasy. See our romantasy list for more.
