The Best Dark Romance Books
Dark romance is a genre where you really want to know what you're signing up for. One book's "morally gray" is another book's actual villain, and the difference matters.
So every pick below has a darkness rating, a spice rating and the content warnings behind a tap. If you're new to the genre, start with something at a 3 or 4 on darkness and work your way up. Nobody's handing out medals for starting with the hardest one.

Questions people ask
What is dark romance?
Romance that goes where the genre usually won't. Stalkers, captors, villains and relationships that would be red flags in real life. There's still a love story with a happy (or happy-ish) ending. It just doesn't get there by being nice.
What's a good first dark romance?
Butcher & Blackbird, Hooked and Twisted Love are all easier ways in. They're dark in places but don't lean on non-consent. Haunting Adeline is the famous one, but it's a 5 out of 5 on darkness and not where we'd start.
Do dark romance books have trigger warnings?
Most authors put them at the front of the book, and you should read them. We also list the main content warnings on every book page here, tucked behind a click so nobody gets spoiled by accident.
Is dark romance the same as romantasy?
No, though they overlap. Most dark romance is contemporary: mafia, college, small towns. When it has fae, vampires or gods, like A Dowry of Blood or King of Battle and Blood, it sits in both camps.
